On the road to a diagnosis - UK

I wanted to share this because it's the kind of information I would've liked to have had in September last year, and I think it would be helpful to hear other people's stories about the road to diagnosis - or why they don't want to take that road.

27th Aug 2011 - I watched a film that touched me deeply and lead me on a journey of information gathering and self-evaluation.  That film was "Temple Grandin".

The more I investigated, the more strongly I suspected that I had Asperger's.  I decided I wanted confirmation.  I found out the following from the UK Autism website:

The UK government passed some legislation at the end of 2010.  It states that all adults who suspect they have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder are to be offered a clear route for a diagnosis regardless of their IQ.

Hello :)

I am new here, and relatively new to understanding anything about Asperger's.

After the pain of my many years walking in the dark, finding out about Asperger's has been a blessed relief.

Now that I've got this far, I am very interested in deepening my understanding and promoting awareness.  Please come read my profile for a bit of info about how I came to recognise the condition in myself and where I intend to go from here.

I'm on a journey.  I'd love to hear about your journey.

x

Hi, new on the forum

Hi, my name is Lilith.

I live in the Netherlands. I'm a partime student in social work, i also have partime job in social work. It's not easy being a socialworker and having autism, it's very tiring. It's not easy at all.

But because i'm an experienced practitioner, i hope i can influence others with autism to reach their goals in life. Because its very tiring to have conversations, i need time to be alone after every social interaction.

I hope that this forum can give me help and  support

Greets, Lilith

Hey

Not sure how active these boards are but I thought I'd sign up and introduce myself.

I'm currently 25, and live with my husband, 2 dogs, 5 cats and a tortoise. I was diagnosed with "pragmatic disorder" in my early teens. This was just before being diagnosed with epilepsy. Both of which were diagnosed, from what I understand, because my mother thought I wasn't doing as well as I should be in school. Though she did think I should be getting 100% for everything, I was told my IQ was tested when I was younger and was in the top 2%. Though later I had more tests and was told parts of my IQ are extremely high whilst other parts are adverage or below. At 23 I was then diagnosed as having Asperger's.

My oldest brother was diagnosed at age 9, and is 3 1/2 years older then me. My other brother is NT and 1 1/2 years older then me. I had my mum recently tell me that I showed signs of being autistic, but at the time she was so caught up in dealing with my brothers and was just glad I was quiet.

What is Autscape?
Autscape is a three day residential conference in the UK, organised by and for autistics.
There are workshops, leisure activities, social opportunities, and more, all specifically oriented to the needs and preferences of autistics.

Autscape welcomes participants from across the spectrum, including self-diagnosed ones, and is also sympathetic to non-autistics.
By the very nature of the event, we are primarily oriented to autistics' needs and interests, but there is much to be learned and enjoyed for open minded non-autistics.

Shall I tell

I noticed a colleague of mine fitting the aspi profile; however, I wonder if she is aware of this. Should I tell her? It is tempting ... but is it wise?

To me it is pretty clear, the staring eyes, the voice, her insterests and cognitive abilities, her clothing and looks; she ticks many boxes.

Currently she is in a job that requires desk work mainly, but she will move to a job where she will have much more on-site contact with corporate customers. In such a job it helps being aware. Should I tell, or leave it to her to dicover?
