AWN’s Appeal to Media Sources Covering Newtown, CT

There is no evidence linking planned criminal violence to autism.

With the tragic events unfolding regarding the recent school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, we here at Autism Women’s Network send our heartfelt condolences to all the families. It is unimaginable what they are going through at this time. The loss of so many innocent lives is unspeakable and heartbreaking.

With a few media sources reporting that the shooter is on the autism spectrum, we want to make an appeal that reporters and news outlets tread carefully in this regard. First, nothing has been confirmed about any possible diagnosis the shooter may have had.

Secondly, there is zero evidence linking planned crimes to autism. It cannot be stressed enough that autistic people, as well as all people with disabilities, are more likely to become victims of violence and crime rather than the perpetrators of such: Crime Victims with Developmental Disabilities.

Choosing a Strong Password

Written by Lori Berkowitz, AWN Director of Technical Services and Web Development

Why you need a strong password:

  • Hackers hack to hack. There does not need to be a personal reason to attack a site.
  • Hackers have tools to crack passwords including:
    1. Programs that rapidly try thousands of passwords at high speeds.
    2. Check dictionary words in all languages
    3. Add numbers to dictionary words
    4. Check common passwords, i.e. ‘password’, ‘12345’, etc.
    5. Guessing common number replacements for letters, i.e. 3 for E

Big Bang Theory

Has anyone watched a TV show called the Big Bang Theory? Awesome sitcom. Sheldon Cooper is a stereotypical Aspie, even though he is never actually referred to as Autistic, Aspie, etc. He can't read facial cues or sarcasm, is very particular about any changes in his daily routine, is inflexible and feels a need to be in control all the time, knows facts about everything, doesn't show much emotion, doesn't touch people, uses computers and tech all the time, and has tried to invent a scientific formula for how to make friends. He has a roommate and some other friends, and they all work together as scientists at a university in southern Cal. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD and season 3 is on TV now (CBS in the USA). They are all considered "nerds" or "geeks" but Sheldon is the Aspiest of all of them!

Many spectrumites I know love this show!!! Cool
