Anyone into genealogy? Or history?

Does anyone have genealogy as a special interest? Or history in general maybe? Or any specific period in history, for instance, i'm into WWII, and the Holocaust (and no, i'm not Jewish). Also the genealogy of European royalty, especially the British. I also have some interest in European prehistory and archeology. I'm also into researching my own family history, have discovered some lines back to about 1700, no mean feat when i'm in the 'Antipodes', and pretty much limited to what i can find online.

I prefer ancient history (Egypt, Greece, Rome/Italy) over modern history myself. :)

That's cool. My daughter is into that too, so i know something about it. She majored in Ancient History as well as English for her BA.

My mother is into genealogy and I have dabbled just a bit.  I definitely wouldn't consider it a special interest.

Like you, I have shared a focus interest on WWII and the Holocaust.  I spent 3 years during high school researching everything I could on the subject.  Though the extreme fascination wore off eventually, I still consider it an interest, and I take every opportunity to watch movies or television shows about the subject matter.

My focus interest (for over 30 years now) is astrology.  My latest interest being in the field of Quantum Physics and Astrology.

European and American history is an interest of mine. I nearly majored in history but that was hard to work out with my first major of English. So I just took lots of classes in it and had a great time! I think if I went past my master's in English, I would have applied to the American Studies program, which is like an American Lit/American history/American culture mishmosh doctorate. It would have been fun, but the PhD and 6-7 more years of grad school seemed a bit extravagant at the time. I was eager to get out in the "real world" and write for a living, which I did manage to do for more than a decade before deciding to stay home with my kids and create fiction.

I really love reading about current events and spend probably about 2-3 hours per day doing that. Right now I'm researching a novel I'm writing and studying up on various American cities and what it was like to live there in the twenties on up to now. It's fun, because I'm learning about pop culture, architecture, music, fashion, linguistics, etc. This is heaven for me.

Re: Genealogy. I invent rather complex genealogies for my fictional characters so that I can build rich inner lives and relationships for them. Sometimes I even design the homes they live in so that I can describe how they move throughout their homes and what props they use. I doubt I'd have the patience to do a real genealogy. For some reason, I'm less interested in my own history than in that of the stories I create.

That's cool! I am trying to complete a fantasy novel, and altho i haven't got into the genealogy of the characters much (tho i do know their parents and cultural backgrounds), i have invented a whole culture and history for their world, as well as designing their houses and temples etc.

That's cool! I was into astrology for quite a while some years back, but without someone to guide me further, it kind of waned.  I still like it tho, i found a close study of my chart revealed some very surprising things, like for instance i only have one very minor planet in an earth sign - figures that i've often not wanted to be here! (on the planet i mean)

I love William Wilberforce. His work of abolishing the slave trade planted the seeds of social justice, including disability advocacy. I love that he worked in community, not isolation. Also, he was so passionate about his beliefs that he would only sign documents if he could personally live out what he was signing in all areas of his life. Integrity!
