Doodling!

I have several interests. One of them is doodling! While I am waiting in doctors and specialists' offices (for my son), I will pull out a scrap of paper and free-hand elaborate designs. Many of them have organic forms in them, sometimes faces, lots of plants. I'm not sure they are useful, but I enjoy experiencing where they go, how they flow from my fingers.

When I was a kid and young adult, I took lots of classes in art and illustration. The pieces my teacher's loved were all elaborate doodles. It puzzled me why they liked those the best.

My mom was an art student and gallery artist when I was a kid. She took me to classes with her, and I learned to draw nudes and still-lifes. The LA art scene in the 1970's was pretty wild. I'm glad I got to experience that!

My dad was the one who was fabulously successful. After my parents divorced, he took us all over Europe, and I got to see the Louvre, the Impressionist Museum, the Prado, and many other collections. I remember thinking as a child that I was cursed, because I was different and didn't understand why. But I really did have a terrific childhood, full of great experiences. And I was fortunate to have Aspies for parents, because they celebrated my differences and unique perspective on the world.

Doodling is my way to reconnect with all of that. It takes me to a calm, happy, reflective place. Writing is my great passion, but that is scary and thrilling, much more exhausting!

Califmom, I never go anywhere without a visual diary and a digital camera. I have a diploma in fine art. I also 'doodle'. I draw anything. I have caused my employers in the past to nearly tear out their hair because I have doodle on important documents. Didn't mean to, it just happened!

LOL, Lauriek. I doodle everywhere, too! Sometimes I will jot down a phone number I need for some reason and then accidentally incorporate that into some design, so that I can't read it anymore.

At work, I not only doodled but I would start free-associating when I was copywriting. I ran a department and supervised several employees who would bring their copy to me to edit, and I had my own assignments to do as well. Well, my style is to free associate the first draft. That way I escape the agony of the blank page. Then I go in and form it into something usable.

Well, such is my tendency to tinker and experiment that I would sometimes literally take my writing experience all over the place, rather like I do when I'm doodling. I've gotten some great ideas for stories from doing this. However, I was being paid to write very specific stuff for a very specific purpose. It took every ounce of strength I had to pull myself back from the brink! I think my bosses tolerated me because I got the work done. But I know they wished I was less complicated!

doodle doodle doodle.  I doodled on EVERYTHING as a child.  Now I limit it to sketchbooks, scrap pieces of paper and such.  I figure it's good practice for when I paint.

I've always doodled, i used to do it on my schoolbooks, my teachers would tell me off but i still did it, often without even realizing i was doing it. I still doodle in the margins of my journals, or on bits of paper while i'm on the phone.

Is there anything in particular that keeps reoccuring in your doodled images? I doodle lots of stars, triangles, spirals and faces. I'd be interested to know if these have some deeper meaning!! (Probably not, it's just that if dreams can have meaning, why not doodles? lol)
