Geeking out with Chromium OS

I seriously need to start attempting to code with it. But I think it's pretty sweet. I hope they figure out what the bug is with my wifi card. It takes 5+ min to connect to the network after I start up my computer. And since it's not end-user ready at all, there are not a lot of panel options. But for my netbook, it's working nicely so far.

Oh and the fact that my 4g dongle doesn't work with it *yet*. I can't use it when I'm out and about which makes me a sad, Melody!

I love this section of the forum.  It's so refreshing to browse around and feel free to embrace my inner geek. Cool

Melody, I had this crazy thought run through my head as I was reading your post.  It dawned on me that if you were to travel back in time and repeat that sentence to "the wrong" person, what do you suppose would happen?  *accusations of being possessed, lunacy, witchcraft?

The way your gEeK sPeEcH flowed so perfectly, I couldn't help but wonder what people from times past would think if they had known even a fraction of what the future would be like?

Google Chrome OS is pretty cool, if you have a constant, reliable connection to the internet. From what I've heard, it's a cloud-computing-based style of OS. It seems like a good idea, security & access-wise - unless you can't get to the internet, of which it can be a problem.

The Chrome OS is actually geared towards netbooks & smaller devices due to their size and limited storage capacity. Although I'm not a huge fan, I like the fact that Google's giving windows a run for its money (and may dam the tide of netbooks being converted from XP to windows 7 starter edition).

What kind of wi-fi card do you have? Is your computer a desktop or a notebook?

I have both my desktop (which I run Windows XP on) and my netbook (which I'm dualbooting WinXP and Chromium OS). The wifi card is built in and it's just a matter of a bug fix so that Chromium (which is built on Ubuntu) sees networks at startup rather than minutes later. It seems to be a common problem for all netbooks that have this particular WiFi card. I also have a USB WiMAX modem that isn't being supported through Linux at ALL right now. It's a reliable connection for me.

I use Google for so many things that the idea of cloud computing is welcome. While there are some things that I will leave to my desktop, there are others that access like this is much preferred.

Nice - I dual boot my laptop (Windows 7 & Ubuntu 9.10) and run EEEbuntu 3.0 on my Asus EeePC 900.

What brand/model of netbook do you have?

I haven't tried Chromium on my netbook yet, but I haven't had any trouble with the wireless network card on it in EEEbuntu. The latest version of EEEbuntu's coming out by early february.

I have an HP 10". I forgot the exact numbers attached to it. And the problem is with Chromium not Ubuntu specifically for my WiFi card. For the USB dongle, it's just not supported by anything.

I'm actually trying out Chromium solely because I want the cloud computing. Otherwise, I'm happy to stick with XP. I don't do a whole lot of coding as I don't have enough time in my days. And I find using Linux builds as a desktop/consumer computers to be a little silly. Plus, I like playing MMOs which are rarely made for Linux and I'm not willing to do virtual boxes for it.
