National Inclusion Week
An idea, thought:
It's the time of year again where school PTAs are asking for nominations for positions for the next school year. I've decided to nominate myself for National Inclusion Week. For those that are unaware, the first week of December (I think it's always the first week) is National Inclusion Week. It's supposed to be the week that schools and the like celebrate inclusion. This year, my oldest son's school was so nice to 'celebrate' it by putting really simple plain print outs of some 'famous' disabled adults on a wall.
Earlier this past year, a leaflet went out asking what 'cultural' background families were from. I asked around to several people trying to get Autistic and Deaf culture to be included. They didn't want to do this and said it was more appropriate for Inclusion Week, but the Inclusion Week person never returned an email or phone call.
Perhaps, for those of you with school aged children, if you can handle being involved, could do the same? Just an idea. Creating inclusion weeks that show Deaf, Autistic, MR, Blind, so on and so forth may be disabled, but should not to be pitied.
