This was in my readings for Chanukah and I felt it was poignant enough to share here:

The soul of your fellow is a ready lamp, filled with the purest oil and equipped with all that is required to convert its fuel into a blazing flame. It only lacks the proximity of another lamp to ignite it. If your own soul is alight, its contact with another's soul will awaken its potential for light, so that it may illuminate its surroundings and kindle other souls, in turn.

And another one as we are testing the block quote function, hm. . .

"The world bursts at the seams with people ready to tell you you're not good enough. On occasion, some may be correct. But do not do their work for them. Seek any job; ask anyone out; pursue any goal. Don't take it personally when they say "no" - they may not be smart enough to say "yes.""-- Keith Olbermann

Since I just decided that that last one would become my signature quote, how about I celebrate by finding a bunch more quotes!

Here's the one that has been my go to signature quote since I was 15:

"Those that restrain desire do so because theirs is weak enough to be restrained"~ William Blake, Marriage of Heaven and Hell

And here's some more I had in my facebook quotes section:

"When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve." - Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms (Chapter 11)

"If a place takes you in and you take it into yourself, you don't abandon it just because it can kill you." ~ Poppy Z. Brite, on returning to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina

"Only in history are reputations built on words alone; in legends, only deeds count." ~ Tomas Burger, Arthur Rex

If you're going to be creepy, at least try to do it with less fail. ~ Ilana

Here is another one of my favorites. Some of the best quotes are lyrics from songs.

"It's not having what you want It's wanting what you've got"

-Sheryl Crow, 'Soak Up The Sun", lyrics.

-------------------------------------------

"You were my strength when I was weak,
You were my voice when I couldn't speak.
You were my eyes when I couldn't see,
You saw the best there was in me.
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach,
You gave me faith coz you believed.
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me."

Lyrics to: 'Because You Loved Me'- by Celine Dion

I like lyrics too, I was rather obsessed with Sarah McLachlan when I was 13 or 14. . . here's one that I loved:

I believe/this is heaven to no one else but me/and I'll defend it as long as/I can be left here to linger in
 silence/if I choose to/would you try to understand. . .
Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free/the mold that clings like desperation/
Mother can't you see I've got/to live my life the way I feel is right for me/might not be right for you but it's
right for me
- Sarah McLachlan, Elsewhere (Fumbling Towards Ecstasy)
and
All the fear has left me now/I'm not frightened anymore./It's my heart/that pounds beneath my flesh./
it's my mouth that pushes out this breath

and if I shed a tear I won't cage it./I won't fear love/and if I feel a rage I won't deny it./I won't fear love.
-Sarah McLachlan, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Fumbling Towards Ecstasy)
If it takes my whole life/I won't break, I won't bend/It will all be worth it/Worth it in the end/
Because I can only tell you that I know/That I need you in my life/
When the stars have all gone out/You'll still be burning so bright. . .
-Sarah McLachlan, Answer (Afterglow)
and my ~song to live by~
The world's on fire and/It's more than I can handle/I'll tap into the water/Try
and bring my share/ I try to bring more/More than I can handle/Bring it to the
table/Bring what I am able
-Sarah McLachlan, World on Fire (Afterglow) (watch the youtube video)
And I could Quote Sarah all day. Seriously, even if you don't like her music, read her lyrics.
and some Amanda Palmer, who according to my mom I'm currently obsessed with:
and I'm not gonna live my life on one side of an ampersand/ and even if I went
with you I'm not the girl you think I am/and I'm not gonna match you/cause
I'll lose my voice completely yeah/I'm not gonna watch you/Cause I'm not the
 one that's crazy
- Amanda Palmer, Ampersand (Who Killed Amanda Palmer)
And this one always gives me a new burst of energy when Advo work is getting me down:
but it’s better to waste your day watching the scenery change at a comatose rate/
than to put yourself in it and turn into one of those cigarette ads that you hate/
but while you were sleeping some men came around/said they had some
dimensions to take/i’m not sure what they were talking about but they sure
made a mess of your face/

but still, no one can stare at the wall as good as you, my babydoll/
and you’re aces for playing along/you’re almost human, even now/
and just 'cause they call themselves experts/ it doesn't mean sweet F*ck all
-Amanda Palmer, Point of it all (Who Killed Amanda Palmer)

"Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can." ~ Danny Kaye

"I'm going home, back to the place where I belong, where your love has always been enough for me. I'm not running from, no I think you got me all wrong, I don't regret this life I chose for me, but these places and these faces are getting old, so I'm going home." - Daughtry

"This is an example of believing in yourself, knowing who you are. Anybody that feels different or weird, screw it! Embrace it! Embrace each other's differences, ok? Celebrate it! It's cool to be different." - Adam Lambert

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning to dance in the rain"

"Without music life would be a mistake." ~ Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

"Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons. You will find it is to the soul what a water bath is to the body." ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

"Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life." ~ Ludwig van Beethoven

"I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality." ~ H.A. Overstreet

"Music has been my playmate, my lover, and my crying towel." ~ Buffy Sainte-Marie

"Music is one of the best ways to enjoy the present. It's not much fun to look forward to hearing music or to remember what a song sounded like last week, but music right now absorbs you and places you in the present moment." ~ Sonnett Branche

"Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without." ~ Confucius

"Music is well said to be the speech of angels." ~Thomas Carlyle, Essays, "The Opera"

Jewel's song "Hands"  Bold emphasis is mine.

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all OK

And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I won't be made useless
I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear

My hands are small, I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

Poverty stole your golden shoes
It didn't steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn't ever after

We'll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
'Cause where there's a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
I am never broken
In the end only kindness matters

They shut me up in Prose –
As when a little Girl
They put me in the Closet –
Because they liked me "still" –

Still! Could themself have peeped –
And seen my Brain – go round –
They might as wise have lodged a Bird
For Treason – in the Pound –

Buddha Quotes

"Your work is to discover your world, and then with all your heart give yourself to it."

"You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger."

"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world."

"A jug fills drop by drop."

"An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind."

These are some of my favorite qoutes:

"May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art - write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself."
--Neil Gaiman

"I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind."
--Neil Gaiman

"Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all."
— Emily Dickinson

"If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain."
— Emily Dickinson

“I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?”
-John Lennon

"Only the phoenix rises and does not descend. And everything changes. And nothing is truly lost."
— Neil Gaiman

"Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you've never been hurt and live like it's heaven on Earth."
— Mark Twain

"Fairy stories are everywhere and everyday. We are all princes and princesses in disguise, or ogres or wicked dwarfs. All these histories are the histories of human nature, which does not seem to change very much in a thousand years or so, and we don't get tired of the fairies because they are so true to it."
-Annie Richie

"Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops at all." — Emily Dickinson

Say to yourself, I am going to work in order to see myself and free myself. While working, and in the work, I must be alert to see myself. When I see myself in the work I will know that that is the work I am supposed to do. I will not have much time for other people's problems. I will have to be by myself almost all the time, and it will be a quiet life.
— Agnes Martin

I exploit what is dangerous and scares me: misogyny, self-deprecation, social climbing, the constant longing for perfection. My work has always been about things in myself that I feel incredibly uncomfortable and embarrassed about.
— Lisa Yuskavage

One thing that's intrinsically a part of my personality is to take something that you thought you already knew and say "Maybe it's different than you think." Is the solar system just a bunch of rocks circling this blob of molten helium called the sun?…I sound like I'm stoned, but I'm not.

I usually don't hear song lyrics because of auditory stuff. I love this:

This is how it works: you're young until you're not, you love until you don't, you try until you can't, you laugh until you cry, you cry until you laugh, and everyone must breathe until their dying breath.  - Regina Spektor, "On the Radio"
