I don't love rats, but I like them and when they are well groomed I like to hold them. Yours are adorable!

My son loves rats - he's always asking for one!  Oh, my..... I just can't bring myself to do it.  I know my fears are illogical, and I am trying to get over the *rodent phobia* I obviously have.  Pictures like this help Surprised

they are very friendly and loving. I have never been bit by any of my pet rats, but I had been bit many times by the hampsters that i have had throught the years.  Remy is a Russian blue rat ( just like the cartoon) and Oreo and Cinnamon are "Dumbo" rats becasue of the positon of their ears. They are rounder and low set unlike the other common rats.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE rats!!

This is Evie the Rat:

Evie the Rat

Yes, that's a hand-knit lace sock she's snuggled up with. When my socks fall apart it's a rat's turn to play.

She's a Silver-Faun Berkshire with Ruby eyes. And she's my best friend in the whole world!

Evie is soooo cute. What do you feed her? Mine love a nice varitey of things like peanut butter, cheese, cereal, fresh fruit and veggies( mine loves fresh peas) and the basic rat food, etc.

Evie eats all the stuff I eat - mainly raw fruits and vegetables - and she especially loves avocado, mango (I give her a whole "cheek" to herself), pineapple, carob bark (carob mixed with coconut oil and raisins and walnuts and then frozen and broken into pieces), broccoli, any kind of seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, hemp, chia) both as-is or after I've made them into crackers (I made a batch of carob-chia crackers that she really seems to like.) She doesn't seem especially fond of tahini or almond butter but she will eat them, too, if I give them to her. Generally I just fill her little bowl with whatever I'm having. I even give her Evie-sized shares of my fruit smoothies. The only thing I don't give her is citrus fruits. They give male rats urinary infections and I don't give them to Evie even though she's female because I don't want to get in the habit and then forget later with a boy rat. And I try to monitor how much fat she gets because rats get scabby skin conditions if they eat too much fat.

Oh, and I give her stuff I don't eat, too. Like the yogurt in the one photo? I get fruit plates sometimes on campus and they come with a little thing of yogurt but I don't eat dairy so I always tuck those in a pocket and bring them home to the rattie.

I figure I must be doing something right because all my ratties (except poor Rodentus Rattus who died at age one of a brain tumor) live to or almost to their third birthday. I'm hoping that's a good sign that I'll live to be 120 eating this way. :-)

I just gave mine some chilled mango and they love it.

Evie always looks downright smug when I give her mango. I cut one side off and score it in squares and then turn the peel inside out and tell her it's a hedgehog. :-)

It comes out looking like this (except her hedgehog's spines aren't so long because I make a more shallow slice for her):

And she will eat on it for days. I used to worry about letting her keep food in her house for days but someone else pointed out that rats are scavengers and if the food wasn't good to eat, she'd quit eating it once it went bad. Rats are many things but stupid isn't one of them.

Oh, I almost forgot. She loves bananas, too. They used to be her favorite food until I started giving her mango.

I bet your rat babies were soooooo cute eating up on their mango! You've got some real sweeties there.

and you have some real talent for food sculpting. That is a great idea to serve mango to people too.

I read somewhere that we "eat first with our eyes" so I try to always make food pretty in case it really does make it taste better. :-)

I love rats (well, boy rats...the girls are too hyper and tend to drive me nuts), though I haven't had any for a while because I just don't have the time to give them at the moment.  Yours are really cute!  :)

I used to keep rats, would love to do it again. I found they were always a great pet and very smart. :)

I had a pet rat once in High school.  Bright and interesting; friendly and chews loudly on the cages at night LOL  The trick is to get  handraised one. Early on they can become fearful of humans and after that they aren't good pets.

you get them when they are young so that they learn to know who you are and trust you.

I am reading Making Animals Happy by Temple Grandin which is an interesting read though not really a priority in my life now. Other than not taking him for enough walks, my dog seems pretty darn content.

Some of the tasks she gives to her students are pretty cool like:

How would you catch a ten foot tall daddy long legs and bring him back to the university without hurting him??

My mom had a problem with the rat's tail. Other than that she was OK but the tail bothered her.

Sorry to hear about Cinnamon and welcome Milo. Always have such a hard time getting used to seeing a naked rat. :)

Not everyone seems to get what an animal can mean to a person.  It has ben noticed hat a LOT of ASD women are "into" animals (what word am i looking for??)

My friend talks about her cats a lot and i keep wanting one. Its such a big deal when one rents to get them to let me have animals. But i do have my dog CJ  He likes to sleep on his back on the couch until i get off the computer and go to bed. Then he comes into the bedroom with me.  He gets on the bed to snuggle and then he goes under the bed to sleep.    I think of it as his room.

My family album looks like a parade of animals.  <giggle>
