Seeking Support from Non-Profits & Gov't. Organizations
This is what's happening to me, in Philadelphia:
I was riding the subway and saw a bill board for www.compeer.org, a group offering volunteers who serve as "supportive friends" and "mentors." I contacted them because I feel this would help me. I'm having a hard life, and I can't beset my friends with my problems. I need someone whose purpose is to help me through this, and I can't afford a therapist or social worker. I'm turned down by government agencies for those services because I have a small amount of money in savings.
I found an email address for compeer and a phone number on their web site. I emailed them several times, and the emails all bounced as undeliverable. The phone numbers were on links to the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania. I've been calling the phone number there repeatedly, and got one voice mail from a woman saying she would call me if I gave a time and date when I'd like to be called. I gave her a time of 3:30 yesterday, but she never called.
This is unconscionable. These organizations advertise themselves as resources for people like myself, and then show flagrant disregard. I'm being proactive and seeking out help, and I'm getting a slap in the face. Is anyone else having experiences like this? All I can do is to keep trying to reach these people via the phone, and if I don't talk to a live human being in the next few days, I'm going to show up in their offices and insist on an appointment with someone.
